THE AUDUBON BALLROOM

ONE NIGHT ONLY

THE AUDUBONO ONO

ACT I SCENE VII

NARRATOR: Patricia keeps referring to Iman, that she is in control and it’s her plan. Well, Iman refused to answer any phone calls or respond to text messages from me; while I was still caregiving for my mom. Patricia claims to be in contact with Iman, but refuses to answer any details about the so-called 'plan'.

THE BABY: You said that you talked to Iman, do you want to discuss that, because like, even Peggy doesn’t know what’s going on with like, things like, like the plan. Peggy doesn’t even really know the plan. And we know, you know, she’s seen the doctor and stuff, so it’s just one of those things, so if you’ve talked to Iman, can you fill us in, what’s Iman’s plan with stuff?

PATRICIA: [silence] You have to call Iman, and ask her, her plan.

THE BABY: Ok, I asked you before, do you think Iman is really willing, do you think she is acting in the best interest of Peggy. Which means that if you’re, if you’re telling me…

PATRICIA: Yes she is. She’s been doing it while you’ve been gone.

THE BABY: Good. Good, so…

PATRICIA: And if you didn’t come back, she would have continued to do it.

THE BABY: Good. Great, great, great, great. So, so you’ve talked to Iman recently, and then you’re asking me to call her. So do you expect her to pick up the phone call?

PATRICIA: She’s not going to pick up the phone call and talk to you?

THE BABY: I’m asking you, because you talk to her and she has the plan. So, if you’re asking me to call her, shouldn’t she, would she pick up my phone call? Because she talks to you all the time, would she? You tell me.

PATRICIA: I don’t, I didn’t say I talk to her all the time. I told you that yesterday, that I don’t talk to Iman all the time.

THE BABY: Good, not all the time, that’s fine, not all the time.

PATRICIA: You didn’t record that yesterday?

THE BABY: So you, you talked to her yesterday, and then you also talked to her today. Or, I don’t know, but you’re saying that you’re in communication with her.

PATRICIA: I didn’t talk to her today. I talked to Dr. Cebellas, he called me this morning and said could you go get Mother Peggy’s medicine. I said yes sir I can. And so I got ready to go and get the medicine.

THE BABY: That’s fine, I know, I understand if Dr. Cebellas, if they arranged that, that’s fine, it’s about the communication with Iman. And, so you just mentioned, you started it off with saying that, you’ve been in touch with Iman, and you called her after I called her. And when we got off the phone with Iman…

PATRICIA: Because I needed to know what to do with her vehicle.

THE BABY: Great.

PATRICIA: And you, you,  you’re upset about her vehicle.

THE BABY: I’m not upset about the vehicle.

PATRICIA: I told you yesterday, that I was going to… when you…

THE BABY: I’m not upset about, I’m not upset Trish. And, I usually, in front of my mom, I usually call her Pastor Trish or ma’am, but she prefers Trish, so just to say, so it doesn’t seem disrespectful.

PATRICIA: No, you can say, you can say Pastor Trish, but you were saying ma’am. I don’t like no ma’am.

THE BABY: Ok.

PATRICIA: I’ve been a professor for 10 years at Daytona State College.

THE BABY: Yes, yes, sure.

PATRICIA: And, I don’t, I don’t need nobody calling me ma’am. Ok.

THE BABY: Good. No, just, just so noone thinks it’s offensive or anything.

PATRICIA: Yeah, no.

THE BABY: Good. What’s Iman’s plan?

PATRICIA: Jamal, why, I don’t know Jamal, uh, Iman’s plans.

THE BABY: Great, is there a reason, is there a reason…

PATRICIA: Why don’t you call her? You want to call her?

THE BABY: Great, ok, if that’s you’re response, that’s great. Is there a reason why you cannot tell me what Iman communicates to you? So I’ll be very open, is there a confidential thing, is there…

PATRICIA: Iman, I told, I told you yesterday Iman said, Iman said…

THE BABY: [coughs] Just, is there a reason why? Or is there, or is that the thing, that you can’t tell me why?

PATRICIA: No, didn’t I tell you yesterday, you said why can’t you take the car to Empire, and I said…

THE BABY: No it’s not about the car. It’s about Peggy’s mobility, for her health. The urine test yesterday, pharmacy today. It’s all about Peggy’s mobility.

NARRATOR: Please notice Patricia’s use of the phrase ‘Mother Peggy’; the Jacksons, including Brittney’s kids would call my mom 'Mother Peggy', in order to try to seem more familial than they really are. You’ll have to see what happens later, but that is a terrible, intentful layer of persuasion to defraud a senior citizen. Meanwhile, my mom is confused about what’s going on, continually asking me about the situation. Patricia evades talking about details, and Iman refuses to communicate with the only mentally healthy person in the house that is just calling for transparency amongst the chaos, that they are actively causing.
