THE AUDUBON BALLROOM

ONE NIGHT ONLY

THE AUDUBONO ONO

ACT I SCENE IV

NARRATOR: The next day, October 15, 2020, I left north of the area to a bigger city. Upon arrival, I found a remote area, parked, and got out the car to take a walk and a breather. While walking, I noticed a car pull up slowly and start following me. I saw that it had lights on it and initials on the door. I thought it was another police car, but in hindsight, it was a security guard. At this point I was fed up with being followed, and started walking towards the car. Then I saw that it was a security guard's vehicle. His windows were up as I approached it and I touched the car. I said, “What's up, what do you want?” He didn't roll down the window or attempt to get out the car, he just drove away slowly. Odd for a security guard at night, especially if I just touched his car. I then started walking back to my car.

Shortly after, three police cars approach me beside my vehicle; apparently, he called the cops. They get out and one starts questioning me about what I was doing there. After a few questions, he reaches for my hand and I instinctively pull my hand back. He then forcefully takes me to the ground and arrests me. I didn't do anything, and had no idea what I was being arrested for. They then pick me up, bring me to one of their cars, then sit me down with my back against the tire of one of their cars.

Remember, I lived in China for five years prior to this, and the police act differently there. If you're not doing anything, they don't even talk to you. While sitting on the tire, the officers were acting boisterous, and I was kind of worried because I was in a remote area. But then my American senses kicked in. I looked up at the officer in front of me, noticed a familiar object on his uniform, and asked, “Is that body camera on?” Then said, “Oh I want to speak to my attorney.” All of a sudden, their entire demeanor changed, and he asked me, “What did you say?” I replied, “I want to speak to my attorney.” He didn't say anything after that, they walked to the other side of the car, and the whole situation became much more formal. After a few minutes, they pick me up, then put me in the back of one of their patrol cars. After a few more minutes, one of the officers gets into the driver’s seat. And for some reason, I’m sitting in the back, he's doing things on his computer in the front, and we're sitting there between 30 to 60 minutes. And it is total silence in the car. Then there's a 15 minute drive to the jail, and I get released the next day. They charge me with resisting arrest without violence. To this day, I still don't know what I was arrested for. How can I resist arrest without another charge? I didn't do anything. There was no reason to be arrested.

PASTOR COFFIE: When you leave here, the first thing they’re going to do, we get that China, go get us some Church’s chicken, and the potato salad, and everybody going to eat off that China. You not!... My point is.

BRITTNEY: I’ve been watching over, taking care of your mom since October 15, 2020, when you left.

NINA SIMONE:
Southern trees
Bearing strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
And blood at the roots

Black bodies
Swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin'
From the poplar trees

Pastoral scene
Of the gallant south
Them big bulging eyes
And the twisted mouth

Scent of magnolia
Clean and fresh
Then the sudden smell
Of burnin' flesh

Here is a fruit
For the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather
For the wind to suck

For the sun to rot
For the leaves to drop
Here is
Strange and bitter crop

LOVE  >  VIOLENCE

"Come where love has no limits. Where we are valued beyond any violence or war. May we live, we live to love another day."
